Chase provides to its customers a wide array of financial services. These include the checkings and savings accounts and much more – from home mortgage to credit cards and wealth management services. Chase also has an excellent banking app and website for those who wish to access their account remotely.
M&T Bank – Headquartered in New York M&T Bank has over 750 branches across eight states and Washington. However, the focus of its commercial activities is in New York. They offer every type of account and money market operations. The checking account has an annual return of 0.02%. While this is not remarkable, it is mostly the same as other banks. M&T Bank also provides the facility for CDs especially the 1-2 year deposits which boast of attractive rates.
New York Community Bank – With branches in over 150 locations spread across New York it is a superb regional player who provides excellent banking solutions for its clients. It has a history of acquiring other smaller banks, and this means it has continued to grow its reach and presence across the entire state. Surveys have shown that New York Community Bank has consistently performed well in customer satisfaction surveys and continues to be a leader in the East Coast. The bank has been commended for its prompt redressal of customer grievances, nominal fees and product menu aimed at all segments of the population. New York Community Bank offers checking and savings accounts as well as CDs to retail customers.
Valley National Bank – With a broad range of account options available Valley National Bank brings enormous value to the customers. Their Reward checking account requires a slightly high initial deposit of $100 but pays annual interest of 0.05% which is more than what one usually receives at large banks. Depending on different criteria such as minimum balance and number of monthly transactions the annual yield could potentially touch 2%. Valley National Bank also offers a variety of savings and money market accounts for growing wealth. The monthly fee is waived off for a deposit of $100 in checking account and $300 in a savings account.
Capital One - Capital One provides higher interest rates on a number of different savings and checking accounts. The Capital One 360° savings account has an annual interest rate of 1%. Compared to some large banks that give as low as 0.02% it is a bonanza. A big facility that they provide is the lack of any monthly fees or minimum balances. One can quickly open a savings, checking or a money market account without any worry of maintaining a required minimum balance. Capital One has a large number of branches in New York which is a departure from its usual practice of being an online bank in most other places.
Bank of America - Bank of America has a unique offering for young clients and students. Their Student banking account has no need of any minimum balance. It also does not charge any monthly fee from school or college student. The accounts can be operated through an excellent mobile app which allows easy access to the account regardless of where one is. Bank of America is one of the most reputed banks in the US and provides a considerable variety of investment and savings options which are hard for other banks to match. They also offer a gamut of credit cards and home loan and different types of mortgage loans.
Apple Bank for Savings – The bank operates exclusively in New York City and has a completely free checking account with no strings attached. Unlike other banks which only waive off monthly maintenance charges if some criteria such as average balance are met Apple Bank has ExtraValue checking account that unconditionally provides free access to all its services. Besides customers receive a $100 bonus if they are able to establish a monthly direct deposit from their employer or some other benefit program.
HSBC – HSBC is headquartered in London but is reputed as one of the most customer-friendly banks in New York. The global banking giant also offers a substantial annual interest of above 2% for those who maintain a $100 minimum balance. Repeated surveys have shown HSBC far outperforms other brick and mortar rivals when it comes to the resolution of disputes in a free, fair and transparent manner. There is also an attractive overdraft facility that does not charge any fee as long as the daily overdrawn balance does not exceed $10.
Santander Bank - Santander Bank provides the well known Student Value checking account. It is very popular among international students who live in New York. Not only is it free for those between ages 16 and 25 but the bank provides a huge discount on wire transfer charges. This makes Santander Bank the bank of choice for expatriate students. Though there are no monthly fees, there is a $3 fee for physical statement every month. The online statement option is, of course, free of charge.
Citibank – The retail arm of the NY based financial giant Citigroup offers a broad range of services and accounts that can be expected from a bank of colossal size. It provides up to $600 as sign up bonus and has hundreds of ATMs and branches spread across New York. The annual interest rate on the savings account is however only 0.04%. The checking account requires a minimum average balance of $500 to waive off monthly fees.
